Internet Meme…Head in the Fridge?

There are a lot of internet memes out there. A LOT. But today I discovered a new one….

Type in 241543903 into Google and click on ‘images’ and this is what you will see…

241543903 Head in the fridge meme

That’s right…a head-in-the-fridge. What? HEAD IN THE FRIDGE. Now I haven’t looked into this with any detail but I have no idea how it started. I thought the number was a phone number but it’s one number too short. I don’t see any logical conclusion to this but the same was for planking and owling. Don’t know what those are, see below. Anyways, if you can explain this phenomenon, please comment and let me know, I’d really appreciate it :)

Till next time…

14 Best Places Your Business Should Be Found Online

We all know our business should be online, but where do we start? After a website and Facebook page, now what am I suppose to do? I have compiled a list of the best places you and your business should be listed online. Keep in mind, there are a TON of other places you should be listed as well, like directories, for example, but this list is of the top sites you should check out. Sites listed with a blue check mark also have a an iPhone/Android app…even more reasons!

1.  Website – Everyone in business needs a website…NEXT!

2.  Blog – WordPress, Tumblr, Blogger(Ideally connected to your website).  You don’t need to be a writer to blog, but  blogging about your business or industry creates a buzz, gets you noticed, and makes you the expert in your field.

3.  Facebook Business Page - Make sure your business is a “page” and not a “profile”. Oh yeah and USE IT!

4.  Twitter - Yes, you want to be there. Period.

5.  LinkedIn  A social place for business, post your bio, upload your resume, make business contacts, create a business page, join groups, find jobs/employees and more.

6.  Yelp .com  A user review site that integrates Google maps, allows users to post pictures, rate, and review.

7.  Four Square –  Using the GPS system in your phone to tell where you are located, users “check in” at these locations. Free advertising for you and (hopefully) perks for them.

8.  YouTube –Create your own commercials, how to videos, or vlog and ‘Broadcast Yourself

9.  LetsLunch.com – Great face-to-face networking tool, get on board!

10.  Google + – Google’s answer to Facebook and Twitter…and then some

What is SOPA and PIPA?

What do Wikipedia, Google, and WordPress, all have in common? They are leading the charge against SOPA and blacking out their sites today, January 18, 2012 in the biggest online protest in history. Many other websites are joining them including little old me, all to protest the internet censorship bill SOPA and PIPA.  So what exactly is it?

This video link below will explain it all better than I can.

What is SOPA and PIPA?

Did You Barrel Roll Today?

Well apparently somebody in the Google office has been playing around with the website and came up with a nifty work day distraction.  Go to Google and type in “do a barrel roll” and watch what happens.  Go ahead, do it I’ll wait……

Did you do it?

Pretty cool huh? Now be honest, you barrel rolled at least 3 times, then showed a couple people at work, then updated your Facebook status telling everyone to type in “barrel roll” into Google, then you sent out a mass email to your co-workers, right?  And if you’re like me, you blogged about it then video taped it and posted it to YouTube.

Because that’s how we roll.

The Women of Google+

The latest numbers are out and with Google+ operating in beta for almost 3 weeks now and reaching almost 10 million users, the big story is there are not as many women on G+ as men.  Mashable.com previously reported there were only 10% women but now it is said to be about 1/3 of the users are women.  An increase, yes.

What does all this mean? Guys are bigger geeks than girls.

In all seriousness, there are some amazing and powerful women on Google+ and if you are someone like me ( a social networking geek), you will be thrilled with the potential opportunity to be associated with such great women on Google+.  Lynette Young, blogger, podcaster, and fellow social media geek, started the WomenofGPlus website and is promoting, inspiring, and learning from the female early adopters of G+.  She encourages women to submit guest blog posts and to connect with others on G+.

I thought this was pretty smart and foward thinking.  I know I have connected with some amazing, smart, like minded women on G+ and have started a WomenofGPlus circle of my own.

Thanks Lynette!

How To Get Into Google+ (Plus)

I am having a love affair with Google+

As you may or may not know I am a social media junkie, especially when it comes to Facebook.  It was my first love.  My website was derived from the movie. My next dog was going to be named Zuck.  However…everything has a season.  A month or so ago we were all threatened with the zombie apacolypse end of the world craziness and even though it never happened, something else is now taking over the world crushing everything in it’s path. It’s name is GOOGLE.

Google has always been a beast and I have been quoted often saying “Don’t try to tame the beast that is Google“.  Maybe that is why “they” let me in.  Yes, I am now part of the elite group of Google+ users checking things out before the rest of the world is brought in.  I have made many friends including MySpace Tom. Yes MySpace Tom…you remember Tom don’t you? Everyone’s first friend on MySpace!

Well, he actually talked to me on Google+ and added me to his “friends circle”.  Everyone is on Google+ it seems…Guy Kawasaki, Mari Smith, (Myspace) Tom Anderson, Scott Monty, Sergey Brin, and even THE Mark Zuckerberg.  You could say my ego is a bit boosted and I’m having fun with it while I can :)

So what is so great about Google+???

It’s like Facebook+Twitter+LinkedIn+Skype….and then some.  AND it’s only going to get better as they make improvements like bringing on the ability to have a business side like Facebook pages.  The good news is, Google+ will only make everyone else improve their sites.  If anyone was going to take on Facebook, it had to be “The Beast” itself, Google.

There is no real science to getting “in” Google+, I really wish I could help more.  You can get on a waiting list of sorts or you can be invited by a user.  If you want in just keep trying. That is my best advise.  An invite is great but ultimately Google decides when to let you in.

Good luck, have fun, and look me up when you get there!

20 Places You and Your Business Should Be Listed On The Web In 2011

Earlier this year I wrote a blog about sprouting legs so Google can find you and if you haven’t read it, please do so here.  The point of that blog and this blog for that matter is to help you get noticed by Google.  SEO practices, pictures and videos, and good content help Google, or new customers, to find you but you also need to be everywhere you possibly can be.  While most businesses may have a website and hopefully have a Facebook page, that is only a couple of places for Google to reach out and find you.  However, if you are listed in 20 different places, guess who begins to rank higher on Google? You, hence the term web crawling!  It’s no secret what these sites are, you just have to look for them, but they can be a bit time consuming.  That’s where I step in.  One of the services I offer to business owners is a set up package which sets them up on about 15+ different online platforms. But today the list will be given to you FREE OF CHARGE, you just have to invest your time. :) Have fun! Now go sprout some legs and start running…you never know who is chasing you!

  1. Facebook Business Page – Make sure you set this up correctly and NOT as a personal profile page for your business
  2. Twitter Account - Yes, it’s a must.
  3. Yelp.com – A user review site
  4. LinkedIn – A social place for business, upload your resume, make business contacts, and post your bio
  5. Blog – WordPress is the best.  You don’t need to be a writer to blog, but use it for informational purposes, write articles, etc.
  6. Four Square – A geolocation service that uses the GPS system in your phone to tell where you are located (store, restaurant, movies, etc) and you “check in” at these locations.  Foursquare will post this info on your Facebook and Twitter accounts.  This is FREE advertising for these businesses if used properly.
  7. Website – Everyone in business needs a website
  8. YouTube – Never thought your small business could afford a commercial? Create your own commercials with a video camera, upload it to your own YouTube channel and ‘Broadcast Yourself’. You can also start your own vlog!
  9. Flickr – A social site to share pictures and videos
  10. Yellow Book Pages – Directory
  11. Google Places – Directory
  12. DMOZ – Directory
  13. Yahoo City Local – Directory
  14. Manta – Directory
  15. Bing - Directory
  16. About.Me
  17. Empire Avenue - Buy stock in yourself and others, all for fun!
  18. Google +  - Google’s answer to Facebook
  19. Letslunch.com – Great face-to-face networking tool still in the infant stages
  20. Pinterest – A virtual pin board that is the 3rd largest social media site to date!

Can Google’s +1 rival Facebook in the social media realm?

June 14th, 2011 @ 11:00am

By Chanda Gunter, ksl.com

SALT LAKE CITY — In March, Google announced its new +1 feature that will rival Facebook’s “like” button on most websites.

This month, the feature was recently launched in beta form and has sparked many conversations concerning its staying power. The idea behind the +1 button is to have users rely on their friends’ recommendations, so the question is just that, will they rely on recommendations while searching Google?

Here is how +1 works:

1. While searching information on Google, click the +1 button of the site you preferred.

2. A user’s friends will see this recommendation the next time they are searching something similar and will help lead them in the right direction.

3. The more friends a user has that clicks +1, the more recommendations he or she has.

Google is known for its outstanding search engine results and algorithm measuring techniques, but it’s not known for its social ability like Facebook and Twitter.

With the implementation of the +1 button, Google hopes to change that and in a sense, compete with Facebook. What it really boils down to is advertising dollars. Both Google and Facebook make most of their money through advertisements.

While Facebook can offer advertisers a more targeted audience because of its ability to capture important data such as age, location, gender and lifestyle, Google must now compete for that ability if it wants those same advertising dollars.

Google’s answer to the lack of social ability is Google Buzz and Google Profiles. Introduced over a year ago and implemented into any Gmail user account, a profile can be set up and information shared over the Web much like Facebook and Twitter. A Google account is required to take advantage of the new +1 feature and will likely increase the amount of Google Buzz users.

While there are some pluses to the new +1 feature, there seem to be more negatives and many questions asked.

~ On the plus side:

1. Facebook needs competition and who better to compete than Google, right?

2. Google is constantly tweaking its algorithm for improved search results, and the social-sharing aspect of user feedback could change the way we receive our information.

3. Search results could become more personal and relevant to the end user

~ On the negative side:

1. A Gmail account in needed to participate

2. Not all friends can see the +1 feature as they can on Facebook or Twitter. When someone “likes” an article it posts to his or her wall and allows for comments. Google’s +1 is only seen by Google friends and/or friends who happen to be searching the same thing.

3. There is currently no mobile version of the +1 feature

4. Facebook is already a proven marketing system and is already recognizable

5. A Google Buzz account can be connected with Twitter, Flickr, Picasa, and a user’s Gmail contacts but is not available to connect with Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn or Yelp.

For now, the +1 feature is still in experimental phase and as a Gmail user, it needs to be opted in to use it. It has a lot of room to grow and will no doubt increase the number of Google account users, but the question still remains” Will Google compete with Facebook? Possibly down the road, but with Facebook’s 500 million-plus users, Google has a long road to travel.

It’s All About SEO, Tags, Keywords, and Trending Topics. (GO MAVS!)

This is a great blog my good friend Paula Adams with At Your Service (a personal concierge service) wrote a few days ago. Great SEO marketing, tags, keywords, and use of trending topics!

~ Since it’s game six of the NBA finals between the Dallas Mavericks and the Miami Heat dinner should be simple. We are having my famous NBA Wieners and Google Doodle Noodles! We all know how to make hot dogs right? WRONG! As everyone in Texas will tell you, you should NEVER boil your wieners. Save the wiener water for the Google Doodle Noodles and grill your wieners. The Google Doodle Noodles recipe has been handed down in my family for generations!

Grandma, being a friend of LeBron James and Dirk Nowitzki wanted a quick and filling dinner before the NBA finals. Wieners are easy if grilled and not boiled! Her Google Doodle Noodle recipe is quick, easy and as follows: One package of macaroni noodles, cook as directed on the box and using the wiener water your noodles weren’t cooked in, drain and add one cup of diced Velveeta cheese. It must be Velveeta and I think there might be coupons out there for Velveeta cheese! Stir in one tablespoon of butter and two tablespoons of milk or cream, salt and pepper to taste. To bring on a little Heat add just a dash of cayenne!  Viola you have Wieners and Google Doodle Noodles!

Enjoy the finals!!!!
